MVL SCHOOL CLOSING POLICY
- If school is closed for the day or if there is an early dismissal because of severe winter weather conditions, all other school-related activities scheduled for the day will be canceled or postponed. Changing conditions may warrant an exception to this. Such decisions will be made by the Superintendent in consultation with the person requesting an exception.
- It may happen that the decision is to have a late start. Weather conditions may change so that a late start becomes a school cancellation. That decision will be broadcast as soon as possible.
- In case of early dismissal:
- When District 88 closes, we will close.
- Students will be dismissed about one hour after a decision is made to close early. This time is needed for our bus drivers to respond.
- It may happen that MVL cancels, delays, or closes early when other schools do not. This is because of our extensive transportation system.
- When severe weather threatens in the early morning, the Superintendent monitors various weather data sources beginning at 5:00 a.m. Consultations with the Transportation Coordinator and Palmer Bus Company are held as he gathers information from his sources. The Superintendent (or Dean of Students in the Superintendent's absence) decides if it is necessary to close for the day or delay school opening. It is our goal to have a decision by 6:00 a.m. However, It may happen that a decision is not made until after 6:00 a.m. because District 88 may not decide until then -- if they close, we close.
- Inclement weather announcements will be made over radio stations: WCCO, KNUJ (AM/FM), KEEZ, KTOE, KYSM, KXAC, KLGR, KRBI. In addition, announcements will appear on WCCO-TV, KARE-11, KEYC-Mankato, KSTP-5 & KMSP-9.
